Final Workshop: Editing, Post-Production, and Evaluation of Inclusive Student Films

Final Workshop: Editing, Post-Production, and Evaluation of Inclusive Student Films

May 12, 2025

The third and final workshop in the STEAMDIVE series, led by Oloklirosi and guided by Lefteris Giannakoudakis during project months 23 and 24, focused on editing, post-production, and film evaluation. It aimed to support teachers in helping their students shape the final versions of their short films—bringing together technical skills, storytelling, and inclusive reflection.

Building on the previous workshops in scriptwriting and directing, this final session marked the transition from raw footage to complete audiovisual narratives. The films explored themes of race, gender, and special educational needs (SEN).

Objectives of the Workshop:

  • Introduce teachers to basic editing tools and software (DaVinci Resolve, Shotcut, CapCut)
  • Support students in reviewing, organizing, and sequencing their footage
  • Guide the process of rough cut and final cut creation
  • Promote collaborative reflection and constructive feedback
  • Prepare films for dissemination and public screening

Workshop Content and Structure:

The workshop began with a reflective session where teachers shared their experiences from the filming phase. This helped foster shared learning and mutual encouragement across schools.

Participants were then introduced to core principles of post-production:

  • Reviewing and selecting the best takes
  • Structuring footage to ensure narrative flow and clarity
  • Editing basics: cutting, arranging scenes, working with tracks and transitions
  • Sound synchronization and rhythm adjustment

Practical demonstrations were provided using free and accessible editing tools. Teachers were encouraged to assist their students in building rough cuts immediately following the session or as soon as footage was available.

A segment of the workshop was devoted to constructive group feedback, emphasizing how editing shapes a story’s emotional tone and inclusive message. Participants discussed technical challenges, storytelling improvements, and areas where student creativity was particularly evident.

Finalisation & Evaluation Phase:

Following the workshop, students—under teacher guidance—completed the final cut of their films. This stage included:

  • Sound design and basic audio mixing
  • Adding titles, credits, and subtitles
  • Visual refinement: basic color correction and continuity edits

To assess the final output, teachers were invited to reflect using guiding questions such as:

  • Does the final film communicate the original script’s intentions?
  • Are the themes of diversity and inclusion clearly expressed?
  • How actively did students engage in editing and decision-making?

Outcomes and Project Impact:

This workshop played a key role in WP3 by ensuring the completion of three impactful short films. The results demonstrate the creative and collaborative capacity of both students and teachers.

Key outcomes included:

  • Fully completed films on race, gender, and SEN(D) inclusion
  • Strengthened digital and post-production competencies among teachers
  • Increased student ownership and expressive confidence
  • Practical understanding of how editing supports emotional and narrative depth

All final films were published on the official STEAMDIVE YouTube Channel, gaining hundreds of views and positive feedback from educators, learners, and parents across Europe.
