Continuing the Steamdive project, which connects science, arts and storytelling to enrich learning and transform it into an inclusive and creative process, an innovative online scriptwriting workshop was held, led by Lefteris Giannakoudakis, screenwriter and director of the Oloklirosi project, with the participation of all partner schools.
This initiative took place on 28 November, 5, and 12 December 2024, 9, 16 and 23 of january, with 7.5 hours of training spread over three weeks. Teachers from Tehnicka Skola, Serbia (www.tsz.edu.rs), Agrupamento de Escolas de Atouguia da Baleia (www.atb23.net) and 11th Geniko Lykio Irakliou, Greece (11lyk-irakl.ira.sch.gr) attended the event.
Workshop content
Essential tools for creating scripts were covered throughout the course:
Session 1: Principles and themes of diversity – Introduction to basic elements such as sluglines, action and dialogue, with a focus on narratives that promote empathy and understanding.
Session 2: Character development and narrative structure – Applying the three-act model and creating sequences linked by internal and external conflicts.
Session 3: Refining and pedagogical strategies – Practical tools to help teachers apply in the classroom. Participants worked on themes such as the creation of loglines creating short and impactful scenes where they addressed issues of Race, Gender and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) in the context of inclusive education.
Objectives and Impact
The workshop main objective was to train teachers to guide students in making films that address social issues and, value diversity. The practical activities called for creativity, collaboration and critical thinking, to promote a more inclusive school environment.
Tools and Activities
During the event, the professional scriptwriting software Fade In was presented to facilitate the technical formatting of this type of writing. The teachers applied their knowledge by creating a short script.
In the final stage of the scriptwriting workshop, the participants dedicated themselves to optimising and finalising the scripts.
During this stage, the participants were given practical tools and techniques to guide the students in writing the scripts, prioritising creativity and engaging storytelling over overly didactic approaches. In addition, teachers were given strategies to support working groups at different stages of the work, ensuring progression and collaboration between students.
It was also suggested that teachers propose strategies that would lead students to meaningfully reflect on the values of diversity and inclusion, strengthening the STEAMDIVE project´s impact on shaping a more inclusive and creative educational environment.
In a second phase, already scheduled for January 2025, the Filmmaking Workshop will be held. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired to scriptwriting. This new module will focus on transforming the stories developed into audiovisual productions, allowing teachers and students to explore the narrative and technical potential of their writing in practice.
The workshop will seek to integrate theory and practice, strengthening storytelling, collaboration and creativity skills, while keeping the focus on the basic themes of this project.
In the final phase of the screenwriting workshop, the participants dedicated themselves to optimizing and finalizing their scripts.
